School’s out and that can only mean one thing: summer vacation. Now is the perfect season to take a little time off and see the world. But before you head out the door, make sure you’re not forgetting anything important, like your oral health. If you’re taking off for some much-needed R&R during the warmer months, here are a few important things to know before you go to keep your smile healthy and happy!
See, and Be Seen
When you go on vacation, the last thing you want to do is deal with a dental emergency. That’s why it’s important to make sure you’re in good health before your adventure begins. If you haven’t been recently, now is a great time to check your semi-annual dental exam off your to-do list. That way you can rest assured that you won’t spend your free time dealing with an oral health issue that could have been fixed before you left, and you’ll be ready for all those vacation close-ups!
Make a List, and Check it Twice
When you sit down to create your vacation packing list, don’t forget to include your dental hygiene supplies. After all, there’s no “time off” from oral health. Be sure to include everything you need daily, so your smile stays safe during your trip. Don’t forget:
- Toothbrush
- Dental floss
- Toothpaste
- Travel-sized mouthwash
- Retainer, mouthguard, bite guard, sleep appliance (if applicable)
- Cleanser for oral appliance (if applicable)
- Storage case for oral appliance (if applicable)
Watch What You Eat
Part of the joy of vacation is indulging in a variety of treats you may not necessarily have on a daily basis. But don’t go overboard. Savoring sweets and carbs should always be done in moderation for both your overall and oral health. If you do enjoy that boardwalk taffy or a block of freshly made artisan fudge, don’t fret. Just be sure to brush your teeth and floss well afterwards and balance it out with a variety of healthier options throughout the day.
Stay in Touch
If you’re travelling abroad, be sure to bring along the number of the local US Embassy or consulate. That way should an emergency arise, you can quickly get the help you need. These agencies can often provide referrals to reputable services such as dentists and doctors, so should a dental emergency occur, you won’t have the added stress of figuring out who to entrust with your care.
Drink Water
With the summer heat in full force, it’s especially important this time of year to stay hydrated. Be sure to carry plenty of bottled water or a reusable bottle to refill while you’re out on excursions. If you are venturing to a place that doesn’t have a trustworthy water supply, remember to keep your mouth closed when swimming or showering, and brush your teeth with bottled water as well.
