Laughing woman with a carved pumpkin Halloween is right around the corner, which means plenty of spooky decorations, tasty treats, and trick-or-treating. Whether you’re taking your children out for the evening or attending a Halloween gathering, don’t let the holiday affect your sleep quality. If you have sleep apnea, simple mistakes can cause you to lose sleep. Don’t spend the night tossing and turning. Here are the tips you need to enjoy Halloween while keeping your sleep apnea in check.

Comply with Your Treatment Plan

After an evening of celebrating, you are likely going to be pretty tired at the end of the day. As you call it a night, don’t forget about your CPAP or oral appliance. Skipping your treatment for even one night can affect your sleep quality and how well you feel the next day. Commit to wearing your CPAP or oral appliance to keep your airways open, so you can sleep peacefully.

Limit Your Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol is known to increase the occurrence of sleep apnea episodes. It causes the muscles to relax, which can affect those in your upper airway. It’s best to limit your alcohol consumption, especially 4 to 5 hours before going to bed. Instead, drink plenty of water to stay hydrated.

Moderate Sugary Treats

Sleep apnea can increase insulin resistance and glucose levels, which can contribute to the onset of type 2 diabetes. 7 in 10 people with type 2 diabetes also have obstructive sleep apnea. Your diet can affect both conditions. Although you’ll be surrounded by plenty of sweet treats to choose from, it’s best to limit your sugar consumption.

Avoid Screens Before Going to Bed

If you’re a fan of Halloween movies, turn off the TV and other electronic devices at least 1 hour before calling it a night. Electronic screens emit blue light, which triggers your brain that it’s time to wake up. You may have a difficult time falling asleep. Instead, read your favorite spooky Halloween stories or find another relaxing activity to help you unwind.

You can enjoy Halloween without it affecting your sleep quality negatively by following a few tips. You’ll wake up feeling your best and ready to start the day.
